Skirt Purse Tutorial

Because you asked and because I love my followers, here is the Thirty-one skirt purse cover tutorial.

Click Pattern Here
*update 9/25/12 : Be sure to download the pattern pieces to your computer and then print them out.

Step 1: Choose a sturdy fabric for your skirt purse, something that is washable and will hold up with time.
(*Also, I recommend washing the fabric before you begin sewing)

Step 2: Iron Fabric.

Step 3: With pattern provided, pin down and cut fabric with same sides together (meaning, printed sides together or wrong sides together)

We will refer to this as the purse body

We will call this the binding

Step 4: Pin the purse binding right side to the wrong side of the purse body.

Step 5: Sew the pinned sides together.

Step 6:

Step 7:  Fold and iron under the bottom part of the binding.

Step 8: sew the folded over hem down to the finished side of the purse body.

Step 9: Repeat steps 4- 8 on other purse panel.

Step 10: Pin the panels right sides together.

Step 11: After you've sewn around the body of the purse, finish the edge with a tight zip-zag stitch. This is to keep it from fraying with time and use.

Step 12: Find the gusset lines with the paper pattern and mark it with a pin.

Step 13: Measure from the end of the fabric 1 1/2 inches and mark with a pencil.

Step 14: To find the gusset, fold the body of the purse using the pin as a guide.

Find the pin.
Pinch the fabric, so the pin is at the top and the sew lines marked in pencil are on either side as shown above.

Step 15: Pin across from line to line.

Step 16: Sew across right were the pins are pulling them out as the sewing machine needle draws near.

Step 17: Cut the excess off the gusset.

Step 18: Finish the edge with a zip-zag stitch.

Step 19: Turn the bag right side out.

Step 20: Pin the binding pattern down on top of the fabric binding and pin were each fastener will be.

to remove the pattern without ruining it, pull pin through until the head goes through the paper.

next slide the paper down the pin

carefully pull off.

Step 21: Using fasteners like below, to sew onto the bag.

Step 22: The fasteners will go on the inside of the bag. Center the fastener over the pin and sew.

Step 23: Carefully try to sew without going through the second layer of fabric. As you sew check the fasteners on your own skirt purse to make sure that they line up perfectly. Adjust accordingly.

Attach to bag!

  3. I have a skirt purse and want to make the skirts using your tutorial as my guide. One quick question: Where did you get the pattern? I can't seem to locate one.

    Thanks so much!!

  4. Hey Nancy! Thanks for you comment. If you notice on the very top of the post is a link named pattern. Hopefully if you click the link it should take you to a web album with the pattern pieces all cut up in sections. Each piece should print out to size on an 8x10 piece of paper. You'll have to assemble it yourself. No one that I know of has tried it yet so you'll have to be my guinea pig and let me know if it works!

    2. My printer printed the pattern a little small so I just cut the pattern out and laid it out on lined paper and just added a inch taped it down and cut it out. I am going to sew it today and we will see. thank you so much for the great site.

    3. I was wondering if you have a working pattern for the City Skirt purse yet? If so, could you email it to me at lockharts71@live.com?

  7. Okay, I think that the link is fixed, so anyone who had problems, try it again! Good luck with your sewing!!

  8. If i were to print the pattern, what size do i need to print it to make it actual size

    ReplyDelete
  9. If you go head and print this pattern out on a regular 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper without adjusting settings it should be the right size. If everything prints out correctly the bag body should be 17 inches at it's widest point and the binding at the top 14 inches at it's widest point. Hope this helps and if there's anything else feel free to ask!

  10. I printed it out like you said the top of the purse body is 14" but the binding printed out smaller than the top. The bottom of the skirt measures only up to 16" 1/2. I'm afraid to try it without knowing if it's right. I was supposed to make a skirt for someone else so i don't have a purse in front of me.
Ps I love your blog, and you have such great ideas. I found you by searching for a patten for purse skirts but you have so many great ideas here. Thanks!

  11. Wow, thank you for posting the tutorial. I made one on my own but my measurements were just a little off so it was a bit big. This helps me immensely. One question though, where did you find the little medal fasteners? Thanks again, much appreciated.

  13. I just found a site that sells just the bars...so excited. Wanted to share...they are really not as expensive as I thought they would be. Even if you don't buy from this site, at least we know what they are called now. :)

  16. Mine printed fine but I haven't had the chance to cut it out and try one out yet. I will let you know if I do. One thing about ordering from that site, they require you to spend a certain amount and in order to order those things, you have to order like three orders of them and it gets pricey. If you plan on making a bunch of them, it would be worth it (selling them and such). Otherwise you would probably be better off just going to a fabric store and purchasing a couple small packages of them to make a few covers. :) If I find any other sites that will help, I will let everyone know. You're welcome for posting. I love blogs like this...you all share what I love dearly, sewing & crafting. :D

  17. Not to post too much, but I found where someone just sewed button holes instead of using these metal fasteners. That's how I did my first one but it didn't seem to want to stay attached as well. Just my two cents.

  29. Just attempted my 1st skirt purse. Printed out your pattern and mine at least, was a tad small. It was a little smaller than a handmade one that a friend bought me for my birthday. I pieced it together and added about an inch all around and followed your directions from there. I'm not great with sewing, but getting better. I did all but add the metal pieces because I havemt bought any yet. I also havent mastered the gusset lines, one ended up in the perfect spot..one up high..lol. So with a bit of work, I hope I'll get better. I'll be attempting at least 3 colts of for Christmas gifts. Thanks so much for posting. You helped a lot!

Hi there! The fold lines are where you will want to tape the pieces together to make the actual pattern.
The pattern itself is larger than your standard 8.5x11 inch piece of printer paper, so I created it in pieces so you could print them out at home. Recently I added clear directions to the blog to help those who were having trouble downloading the pattern. Good Luck!!

From what I recall on her purse, I don't remember the bottom being rounded, I thought it was a rectangle. I would hate to waste the fabric is it isn't going to fit properly. Can someone let me know how the bottom corners are shape on the purse...rounded or squared. Thanks, Cheryl

I don't bother with the hooks - I just use safety pins. Easy to adjust, they hook over the clips on the purse just fine, and they're covered by the leather so no one sees. :)

    2. Faye, I opened each piece individually and then chose download. When asked if I wanted to open or save, I chose save. I have Windows 7 and it automatically saved to a folder named downloads. I created a folder on my desktop and named it Skirt Purse. I then drug each piece into the folder to make it easier to find. I printed the pieces from there. I taped them together and we will see how it turns out. My daughter and I are going to give it a shot! Hope this helps.

  76. Hello, I love the purse skirt pattern. I have not yet purchased my first purse, so it will be one of the new versions with a zipper top closure.
I do have a couple of questions regarding the pattern. I saw an earlier posting that says, "The fold lines are where you will want to tape the pieces
together to make the actual pattern." Ok, so I am taking it that you just butt the edges of the pieces up against one another and then tape the edges
together? This is what one of the downloaded images appears to be showing, the pattern piece that says "Skirt Purse". Is my assumption correct?

My second question is regarding the seam allowance. Is the 1/4" seem allowance included in the finished
pieced together pattern or do we take the taped-together pattern parts and then cut it out 1/4" larger?

For those of you who have made these skirts, what type of material did you use for the skirts? And what would NOT be good choices for material?

Thanks for answering my question!!! I checked out all the sample purse skirts that all of you posted and you did a GREAT job. I am thinking that
$15.00 to purchase another skirt is not too bad, but the choices are limited and you can have so much more of a selection by making your own.

just found this great pattern> Can't wait to try it. I love porses for all holidays! I will sew my first for Valentines Day! Love Thirty Ones idea but they are so limited. Thank you so much!!

  80. I finished mine Monday. Turned out great. Had a little trouble with the gusset. Finally opened the gusset on my existing skirt and got the placement from that. The hardest part for me was sewing on the bars. My fingers are sore. I used heavy duty iron-on interfacing on the binding. I like the way that turned out, but made it a little tougher to sew the bars on. Did help keep me from sewing all the way through, though. It is also expensive to buy these from Walmart, though and you can only buy the complete set. Since I don't plan to go into production, I don't want to buy in quantity. Think I'll consider going the buttonhole. I plan to "tweak" my pattern a little and cut one out for each of my daughters. My youngest daughter doesn't know she needs one. I bought her a purse on Ebay that I'm going to give her next week.

    ReplyDelete
  81. After I published my comment, I looked through some earlier comments and found this site to order the bars only that one of the others had posted: http://www.richardthethread.com/index.php?submenu=Fasteners&src=directory&view=shop_richard&srctype=detail&id=58&category=Hook-Bar-Eye. I ordered a gross for only $10.95. They don't even charge shipping. Now I just have to toughen up my fingers!

    1. I received my eyelets yesterday. I was mistaken in that they did charge $7.00 shipping which is steep for such a small pkg. but still OK overall. The site didn't show that. Used my new skirt today and got some compliments.

  84. Hi thank you for this great resource! I am wondering reading through all the comments, some say it worked perfectly, some say they added an inch. Have you adjusted the pattern pieces to reflect the change that people have said was needed (the inch?)

Another good question that I did not see answered (I may have missed it) are the 1/4 seam allowances already added in or do we need to do that.

I am VERY excited to make one asap ;-) thanks again!

Worked like a charm for me anyway, hope it helps someone else too.

  89. HI There! What an awesome tutorial. I just went to my first thirtyone party and wanted the skirt purse (and have been obsessing about it since seeing it), but I didn't necessarily like the fabric skirts they offered. Figured there has to be a pattern on line SOMEWHERE and WHALAH! Your brillant! Can you email me the pattern? j.flats@charter.net Thanks so much! one more question! will this fit the zippered purse skirt as well? THANKS!

    1. Hi there. Noticed you got a purse skirt from Goodwill, you lucky dog. Wow what a find!!! But make sure it is not the first version of the skirt purse called The City Skirt Purse which is discontinued and it doesn't fit this pattern. I know this is several months later, so hope you figured it out, which I'm sure you have.

    1. When I went to print my pattern pieces, the paper size listed before printing was not correct. When I changed it to 8.5 x 11, the pattern pieces printed perfectly. Just a thought. Maybe yours comes up that way too.

  94. I can't believe I can't believe I hadn't heard of the skirt purse before now but I love the idea and I am ordering a base today. I have had such fun reading your blog and your tutorial is awesome! Did you have any idea how many of us would find you through this?:0) I am so glad I have! I understand through the course of reading others notes that the new bag has a zipper and fits differently, are there special adjustments that need to be made to the pattern?

Oh and before I forget, would you be so kind as to email the pattern to me at jewelsrowsey@nc.rr.com, I would be so grateful! Wow I am so excited, again thank you so much!

  124. I too figured out the pattern and have made dozens of the skits. My change is to sew 1/2" hook and loop tape to under the flap of the purse (make sure you have pinned the zipper out of the way) and then that again to the inside of the skirt. You put a hook side and vel side on each bag and same on skirt to not waste product. I couldn't see buying all those metal pieces to sew on and then throwing half of them away. Beside, hand sewing the clasps was hard on my wrist. I sew it together with the serger and serged the raw edge of the flap. Then the whole flap does not to be sewn down as the sewn hook and loop tape does that.
It is a blank palate to do machine embroidery, button decorations, pocket emblishmants etc, etc!!! I am having a ball and must convience more family members to buy the thirty-one to spread out my new project.
I made my pattern by opening up the rabbit ear flaps on the skirt that came with the bag and then it lays flat to draw out your own pattern.

    1. That's the way it is. Although I LOVE that she put out a tutorial, I suggest that you take apart a skirt you already have and just trace it! It goes back together very easily and you can actually see what it looks like and how it's done. :)

  139. Can anyone tell me where to get this exact fabric. It is just fabulous but I can't find even anything slightly related to it. I found the clasps at Walmart as someone had mentioned for $3 for 6 (they came with the other part of the clasp). I saw online at Hobby Lobby that they too have them for ~$3 for 12. Please reply if you have fabric suggestions. I love this modern print and am looking for fabric to match the brown skirt purse. Thanks.

Her photo album only has her picture and a picture that says "Open" labeled as Whatthefont. I give up! All the people above who were able to get the pattern aren't sharing.
